Sunday of the Fathers of the Council of Nicaea

May 12. Commemoration of our Holy Fathers Epiphanius, Bishop of Cyprus and Germanus the Hymnographer, Patriarch of Constantinople.

Epiphanius, born in Palestine around the year 315, became a monk and a disciple of Hilarion. He was a learned theologian, an abundant preacher, and a writer remembered mostly for his “Panarion” or “Medicine Chest” in which he explains the doctrine of the church and refutes eighty heresies.

Germanus, born in Constantinople under Emperor Heraclius (640-641), was of noble origin. He became Bishop of Cyzica around 705 and was transferred to Constantinople in 715. Unable to convert the Iconoclastic Emperor Leo the Isaurian, he left the omophorion on the holy table and retired to his home. The war was in the year 730. He died three years later. He is the author of many prayers and hymns.

Scripture Memory

“Keep watch over yourselves and over the whole flock of which the holy Spirit has appointed you overseers, in which you tend the church of God that he acquired with his own blood” (Acts 20:28).

“And now I will no longer be in the world, but they are in the world, while I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are” (John 17:11).
